60s Fashion

Perfect Hairstyles of 1960

When we talk about fashion, how can hairstyles be far behind? Fashion is complete only when you look perfect. You cannot look perfect with a disgusting mop of hair on the top of your head. The hair must go with the clothes you are wearing. Since 1960 was an era of change and revolution so the hairdo was also very similar. The hippy style that the people followed was also reflected in the way they styled their hair. The head coverings also changed significantly in late 1960. Hats went completely out of fashion. Men either wore no headgear or just wore bandanas.

The kinds of hairstyles those were famous in the era of 1960:

The mop-top hairstyle was famous with men of that era. The length of the hair increased and reached beyond the collar bone as the decade came into an end. Men completely followed the hippy hairstyle in the late 1960. Men even started growing facial hair. It started with keeping longer sideburns. Then men started keeping mustaches with long sideburns. Eventually men started keeping full grown beards in the late 1960s. The Afro style was also followed. In the afro style the hair is allowed to grow naturally up to a certain length. This was also known as the cloud or ball shaped hairstyle. But the afro style was difficult to attain. “Afro” wigs were also available in the market so that men could follow the hippy fashion. Beehive hairdos became the trendsetter in early 1960. The contour cut and the pageboy cut also became popular in mid 1960. In the late 1960s came the short cropped hair cut which was also known as “Twiggy” haircut. Jacqueline Kennedy was the trendsetter and a style icon for all the women in that decade. Women followed and copied whatever clothes she wore and whatever haircut she approved.

Men and women both patronized long hair in the decade of 1960. Women also curled their hair a lot. Some women went for short curly look while some women went for a ruffled look. The short hair styles were mainly for the party look. “Piquant pixie” was another prominent hairdo in the era of 1960. Women used wet rollers to curl their hair for special occasions. The rollers that were used were almost the size of coke cans. You cannot use a blow dryer for this purpose. Though electric rollers were available, women preferred the handy wet rollers. After the hair was set, you had to sit under a dryer for an hour. In this precious hour the curls used to settle down and would give women the look they wanted. The curls also varied. Some women went for deep curls; some girls went for short tight curls while some women even went for spit curls. “Bouffant” hairstyles were also followed. The chignon hairdo still existed but it was more ostentatious. Sometimes long loose curls were left to hang around the back crown.

The longer straight hairstyle was something that only the teenage girls followed. Hair is something that is very precious to us. You may be beautiful but if you do not have gorgeous hair, you won’t look stunning. Hair is a woman’s asset. The women of 1960 didn’t bother about the haircut too much. They were more worried about getting the right haircut which was both trendy and suited them. Women of 1960 kept long hair or short hair depending on the kind of lines they lead or the kind of parties they attended. Often bandanas accompanied the hairdo to give a trendy look. The bandanas gave an extra touch of zing to their look.
