A Peep inside the 1960’s Fashion Trend!
1960 is an era of fashion, modernity and evolution. It is the era
which challenged the complicated rules of society and defied all the
laws. Women came out of their shells. Men started to experiment with
bright colors. This change materialized because of many reasons.
Assessment of civil rights, social movements, anti-war movements helped
people to modernize their views and this modernization reflected in
their fashion. The British were the trendsetters. The exquisite class of
“Mods” came into existence in this era. The dominated the fashion world.
The “Edwardian” look also popularized in this era.
 Music stars staring from Elvis Presley and the rock band Beatles
affected the fashion world significantly. Women patronized Hollywood
stars like Penelope tree, Colleen Corby, Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and many
more. They started following the fashion statement put forward by these
stars. Many women even blindly copied whatever the stars wore or
promoted. 1960 is also an age of the hippy look. Hippies symbolize
happiness and love. People who were stressed out with wars and
disruptions found a breath of fresh air in the hippy style of dressing.
They wore it show off their free mind and their right to wear whatever
they like. They almost celebrated freedom by wearing the casual hippy
clothes.
Miniskirts were the first invention of this era. These miniskirts were
rampantly worn by women and girls alike. Soon the combination of a
miniskirt with a polo neck blouse or a chiffon blouse became famous.
Miniskirts are worn happily even today. Its hemline has undergone many
transformations but the beauty of the skirt still remains untainted. The
miniskirt was soon accepted by the sportspersons as the skirts were very
comfortable. Flower prints, paisley prints, fabrics became a rage.
Dakshinis became quite popular too. High baggy pants, bell bottomed
pants were worn at every occasion. Levi Strauss was the first brand that
sold bell bottom pants in jeans. Bell bottom pants were also available
in velvet. Do you know that “Sony and Cher” were the ones who promoted
and popularized the bell bottom pants?
Bikinis also came into existence in this era. This two piece swimsuit
was a revolution in itself. The vivid patterns, wonderful colors and the
attractive design instantly captivated the attention of women. Women
started wearing bikinis to beaches and even pool parties in the hot
weather. The rectangular shaped bikinis were the most sought after ones.
It is probably the most sizzling dress for women. Women look fetching in
bikinis.

Women and men of this era didn’t consider accessories too much. But
still some of them need special mention. The pill box hat which was
reinvented in this era was very famous. Women could wear to any occasion
and could team it up with any dress. Brides also started wearing pillbox
hats after a veil was attached to it. Silk, satin, felt and many other
materials were used to manufacture the hat. The pillbox hat was
originally a part of the British uniform.
The “go go” boots won much acclamation in this era. Women teamed up the
boots with miniskirts and very short dresses. The boots came in a
variety of colors and also had a side or a back zipper attached to them.
The boots had a pointed front. These boots are still worn today but with
slight modifications. Nowadays laces are used in the boots that give the
boots a sophisticated look.
How can fashion be complete without the mention of hairdo? Curly
hairstyles became popular in this era. Long curls, big curls or tight
curls, every woman wanted curls on her head. The beehive style was also
pretty famous. The hair was either kept long or short. But long hair was
more preferred. Men also kept long hair that reached their collar bones.
The afro style was renowned to make the men look like hippies and thus
make them look trendy. The hairstyle perfectly matched with the kind of
clothes they wore.
